Activities

Prayer - we believe that prayer is essential to the life of the church and our ministry in the community.  All of our regular programmes incorporate a strong emphasis on prayer.  We hold regular days of prayer to seek God's guidance and direction.

Bible Study groups - various groups meet in the week during the daytime and evenings.  These are precious opportunities to grow closer to God and to build relationships. Please contact Jean Cunningham if you are interested in joining a home group.

CatURpillars - parent and child activity session for babies & toddlers held:
 Thursdays 12:45 - 14:30
 Fridays 10:30 - 12:30.

See separate page for more details.

Prayer Group For The Suffering Church - see below.

Wednesday Special - for the more mature in years.  A chance to meet new friends, have fun and some tea together… plus a pause for thought about God.  This is usually held once a month, on a Wednesday afternoon.

Fellowship Breakfasts - Saturday gatherings for men and for women take place every now and then over a cooked breakfast.

Summer Picnics - held once each month in June, July and August, after our All-Age Services.

Church Day Away - an annual time to go deeper with God and with one another.

Football - see below

Our weekly notice sheet and our monthly church magazine, 'The Link', gives more details on church activities and is available from the church.

Other Support Activities

Prayer Ministry Team - is available every Sunday after the 11:00 service to pray with you.

Christian Healing Ministry - we believe that the church is charged with the task of continuing the work that the Lord Jesus Christ began and that healing is an important part of its ministry.  Jesus is the only true healer and he works both through medicine and through the prayers of his people.  We follow the Biblical practice of 'the laying on of hands' for healing.  Please contact the minister if you have a particular need in this area.

Lending Library - we have a library of Christian books, which are available to anyone interested.

Sermons On-Line - recent sermons can been heard on line at www.shanklinurcmedia.org.uk.

If you missed a service or were out leading a Junior Church Group this is a great alternative of keeping in touch.

Outreach

Alpha Courses - these are held periodically for those who want to find out more about the Christian faith.  This and other outreach events and activities are now being developed with other local Christians.

See the Christians Working Together In Shanklin page for more details.

Services at Greyfriars Residential Home - held on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 10:30.

Services at Tile Residential House - a communion service usually held on the second Friday of each month at 11:30

Services at Springfield Nursing Home - usually held on the last Friday of each month at 11:00.

Prayer Group For The Suffering Church

A prayer group has been meeting in Shanklin for 23 years this year and comes from several different churches. Meets monthly in the church on the second Monday of the month at 14:00 - if attending, please use the Landguard Road entrance

When it first started, it met every week and over the years those attending have learnt so much as they have prayed for our brothers and sisters who are suffering  persecution for their faith and have seen wonderful answers to prayer.

If you would like to know more, please speak to Pat Moore, Sue White or Jane Hancock at Church.

On our Christian brothers and sisters who are being persecuted for their faith

This month as we settle into another year and look forward to challenges and opportunities in our lives, we focus on Christians who are facing further years in prison.

Please Pray for the following situations:

VIETNAM – Trung was arrested in Oct 2004 and sentenced to 8 years in prison because of his Christian activities

CHINA – Li Mingshun and Zhang Yon Ghu were last year given 10 and 7 years sentences respectively for providing food, shelter and transport to 61 North Korean refugees fleeing through China  to South Korea

ERITREA – More than 2,000 Christians are believed to be in jail.  Many, including several prominent pastors, are being held indefinitely without trial

KOREA – 50 to 70,000 Christians are currently detained in labour camps

ALL PRISONERS – Their loved ones at home suffering greatly as they wait and pray, sometimes with no news for years

Football Team

Over the last few years Shanklin URC has developed football practices most weeks and has regular games against a couple of local churches and some other ad hoc teams. Informal practice sessions are usually on a Saturday at 13:00 at Sandown High School in the winter months and Friday evenings in the warmer weather – contact Steve Jones if you are interested in coming along.

Here are some photos of some of the players who took part in the beach football tournament at Ryde in the summer of 2009.
